| Bob Ferrel was born in 1960 in Montclair, NJ. A hard-working player, Bod does not shirk from teaching 26 hours a day; no wonder he's got chops as big as "The Ritz". At the same time, he revels in the most varied contexts - from the Ellington band to Southside Johnny and the Jukes (with Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi) - and with the most talented individuals - how about Ella and Sarah, Cootie Williams, Kenny Garrett, Mulgrew Miller, Slide Hampton, Raul De Souza, Nancy Wilson, Eddie Henderson and many more. He also is Musical Director with the Spirit of Life Ensemble, where he met Ted Curson some six years ago at Sweet Basil in NYC. Bob still finds time to work with his won soulful, superb quartet that features Michael Cochrane, Calvin Hill and Yoron Israel. All this accounts for his having honed a muscular and sensitive trombone style. From New York to Tokyo, Paris to Sydney, Bob's exploding sound has convinced millions that the trombone is an instrument worth checking out. His stylistic range stretches from the realm of swing to free, haunting multiphonics and Latin extravaganza, raging hard-bop and raving hard-core blues. He defines it as a transposition of Coltrane's music to trombone. Indeed, nobody has really undertaken that task (and many players are still content with some shy parody of swing or some vain, but unfortunately, highly successful imitation of the New York subway sound at rushhour). Ted Curson is a historical monument, He performed with Dolphy and Mingus. Thanks to him, trumpeters around the world know what heavyweight soul means. "Tears for Dolphy" is Ted's feature, Pier Paolo Pasolini used in his film "Theorem". The only trouble being, according to Ted, that "There was so much sex in that nobody could hear the music". The mellow blend of flugelhorn and trombone gives a lavish and lambent treatment to that moving melody.Bob Ferrel has taken a radically different stance; Challenging music that feels good - Energy and Soul - Elegance and Boldness - Intelligence and Fire - Independence and a Sense of Purpose. The result as you can hear, is a complete fulfilment and realization of that. You won't regret the journey.
